Culture in Merano, South Tyrol
By 1850, Merano was widely recognized as a leading European spa resort. A favorite of Austria’s ruling Habsburgs, Merano became a popular meeting place for European aristocracy.
Merano’s unique location makes for a mild climate with nearly 300 days of sunshine every year. The resort was recommended for those suffering lung and breathing ailments due to the healing powers of its fresh, clean mountain air. In bygone days, Merano’s tourist season stretched from September through May. And visitors continue to be fascinated by the city’s fabulous architecture.

Austrian Empress Eisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sissi.
